Misting Fan Guide

!±8± Misting Fan Guide

If you've ever been to or watched a large outdoor event like a football game on TV that took place in hot, humid weather, you've seen a misting fan. Misting fans create a 'chill zone' in the area around the fan. This air can be up to 40° cooler than the current air temperature. Most of these fans use a rather simple technology called evaporative cooling (like holding a we towel in front of an electric fan), but makes more effective and useful. These large misting fans have pumps that create water pressure forceful enough to push the water through fine nozzle holes. This generates a fine mist that evaporates almost as soon as it hits the warm air and sun. These drops of water pull heat with them, causing the air temperature near the fan to drop noticeably. There are several applications for misting fans.

Many outdoor sports are played during the hot summer and early fall months. Summer sports leagues for children have to be especially careful with heat stress on their young athletes. College and professional football teams are proponents of big, portable misting fans. You can usually see several of them on the sidelines of both teams with players crowded around them. These teams cannot afford to have players dropping out of the game from heat exhaustion. The temperature on the field in some of these games can be over 100 degrees. Standing on the sideline can feel just as hot as if you are out on the field playing. When you have misting fans that can drop the temperature by 40 degrees, the danger of heat stress on the players is lessened.
